The organisation

Medtronic is the global leader in medical technology - alleviating pain, restoring health and extending life for millions of people around the world. The Bakken Research Center (BRC) has been established to develop and maintain strong relationships with European clinicians. The BRC also serves as a liaison with European academic centers and industrial research which is synergistic with one or more Medtronic businesses. Medical specialists and Medtronic organizations will consider the Bakken Research Center in Maastricht as their preferred partner in clinical and biomedical research and evaluation programs in Europe.



The experience

BRC has extensive and long standing experience in contributing to human welfare by application of biomedical engineering in the research, design, manufacture, and sale of instruments or appliances that alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. The BRC played a major role in the creation and realization of several world class therapies, like Deep Brain Stimulation and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy. In house capabilities include the mechanical design and build department with machine shop and class 1000 cleanroom; the biomaterials department with cell laboratory, analytical lab, microscopy lab and chemical lab and the advanced concepts department with electrical engineering experience and electrical lab. The BRC is completely organized to effectively conduct human clinical studies to bring new products to market including the necessary regulatory and quality operations. Small series can be produced in house.
BRC has participated in the past in a Brite-Euram project concerning surface modifications and is currently a partner in the European project MyHeart. In addition the BRC is actively participating in various national programs in the Netherlands and Switzerland
